Ariel Pink - Pom Pom

Below is my favorite track off the soon-to-be released new Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti album - Pom Pom, which is out Nov 18 on 4AD. I usually include stories about the musician's I write about, but the one I have about Ariel is probably not suitable to be posted publicly. I realize that's a total cocktease thing to do, but, well, be happy with what you get :P

Caribou - "Our Love" album

The new Caribou album "Our Love" leaked recently and it is glorious. Very uplifting and I've created some ridiculous new dance moves in the mirror while listening to it (sorry, it's just what I do when I really like something).

Also, I'm not normally big on "dance music", but this guy has somehow made a seamless and brilliant transition over the years from semi-traditional indy rock to electronically based dance pop music.
Not an easy feat.

Definitely my favorite album of the year so far.

A couple of my preferred unreleased cuts are below:

Caribou - "All I Ever Need"

Caribou - "Your Love Will Set You Free"

Molly Nilsson - The Travels

I met Molly Nilsson in San Francisco in 2011 after she played a show at El Rio during her first US tour. Like many people, I had originally heard of her as "that artist that John Maus covered on his popular song "">Hey Moon" (it turns out that he didn't even really cover the song...she sent him an mp3 of the song and he just sang his vocals over it). After doing a little YouTube search for her name I was pleasantly surprised to find that she's released a treasure trove of incredibly well written songs and music videos.

In October of last year Molly invited me to go on tour with her in California and I gladly accepted. I became her de facto "chauffeur, merch guy, and stand-in tour manager." I'd never done anything like this before mind you, but it somehow worked out perfectly. While driving through the hot sloping hillsides of the California Grapevine, Molly played for me a tropical yet darkly tinted gem called Philadelphia from her then-upcoming album, which you can listen to below.

Molly writes all her own songs, plays all her own instruments, started her own record label, releases and promotes her own albums, does all her own tour management and often tours by herself...she somehow does everything. And friendship aside, I think she literally might be the most under-appreciated songwriter alive today. But nevermind that...I have a feeling she prefers it that way.

Her brand new album "The Travels" is out now via Dark Skies Association and can be purchased here.

Baby your love is bigger than a football field
I'm the hooligan of your heart
Sometimes we win but sometimes we lose our dreams
But i always wear the colours of your team

I hope you die by my side
The two of us at the exact same time
I hope we die long from now
The two of us at the exact same time

The Knife - New Unreleased Song

For those who aren't already counting down the days, Swedish electronic music duo and brilliant media mockers The Knife are prepping to release a new album on April 9. It's called "Shaking the Habitual", is over 100 minutes long, is their first since 2006's highly regarded "Silent Shout". I've heard snippets of all the songs and though there seems to be some pretty bizarre shit on there, there are also at least a couple more accessible electro-pop gems on there. The song I'm posting below titled "A Tooth for an Eye" just leaked and is one of those gems. I'm obsessed with hit. Listened to it on repeat yesterday for an hour straight while driving around the city. It will probably get taken down by Google pretty soon so check it out while you can:

Mice Parade

This is my first blog post in over two years. Life has been a real roller coaster the last couple years but I will spare you the details for now. After all, this is a blog about music and movies, not my public diary. But in a nutshell, I stopped blogging because I got wrapped up in "other stuff", Google started taking down my songs, and also because I am not Tavi Gevinson and blogging simply doesn't pay my bills. But over time I realized there's something cathartic about writing and sharing things I like with others, so maybe there will be more to come.

I first met Adam Pierce - the New York based percussionist/multi instrumentalist of the band Mice Parade - about 8 years ago after they played a show at The Black Cat in Washington DC. I was obsessed with the band at the time, and after the show I convinced my girlfriend at the time to come over and meet him. I was extremely intoxicated, and took it upon myself to write down my myspace music link for him and basically told him that we should "play music together sometime." I think he was insulted by my gesture to play music with an amateur like me, and though it's probably one of the dumbest things I've ever done, I remember him being kind of a prick about it.

It turns out that Mice Parade has a long history of dickishness (search "mice parade" in the interview link), but as long as they're making good music then I don't care how they act. I hadn't listened to the band for years, but after Pfork recently trashed their new album, I decided to give it a listen and was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I think it may be one of the most underrated albums I've heard in a long time. Have a listen to one of the standout tracks "The Chill House":

Contact me or leave a note if you want me to post the entire album.

PS - check out this short Vice documentary about this crazy guy that injects snake venom daily and looks half his age:

Twin Shadow

Definitely one of my favorite new artists this year, and even though Twin Shadow looks like a serial rapist, you mustn't fear this man. He makes beautiful, heartfelt yet danceable tunes that have a nostalgic sound reminiscent of The Cure, mixed in with some modern day hazy beach vibes.

Check his creepy good video and standout track below:

Twin Shadow - Castles in the Snow

Hori Smoky Sailor Jerry (Film)

If you have any interest at all in tattoos I suggest you watch this film. Sailor Jerry, who you might recognize as the guy who has his own brand of spiced rum, was a complete asshole and likely a right wing libertarian, but he was also a pretty fascinating dude that paved the way for a whole generation of artists and misfits. The movie's pretty artsy (but not overly so), and did I mention that the real Ed Hardy is in it? It turns out in real life he's actually a pretty cool guy - too bad he had to contaminate the planet with that other thing.

Coma Cinema

Been totally hooked on Coma Cinema for weeks. I know absolutely nothing about this band besides the fact that I downloaded them on the interweb and am hopelessly in love with their sound. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like the entire Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack transmogrified into one artist. Kinda gives me that awesome feeling that The Microphones and early Modest Mouse did when I first heard em. Plus the album is called "Stoned Alone", which should be reason enough to listen to this. There are two songs below (and a really good bonus track from Balam Acab that has nothing to do with this post) and you can download both his albums FOR FREE RIGHT HERE.

Coma Cinema - Tall Grass

Coma Cinema - Only

Balam Acab - Regret Making Mistakes

Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam (Film)

Damn, I haven't blogged in two whole fucking months! I'm sure that my 3 or 4 readers were upset for at least a week or so and then got on with their regular lives sans moi. Anyway, I'm back, and you should totally go watch this documentary from the early 90's called Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam. In case you didn't know, Heidi Fleiss is a crazy ass druggie high class prostitute who by the age of 27 was running a large "elite" prostitution ring out of Hollywood. The best part about this doc is simply the characters that are interviewed. The Hollywood movie director who threatens to cut off people's arms and legs, the mysterious israeli ex-military guy who basically runs everything, and Ron Jeremy (who surprisingly had a lot of friends in very high places). Even the fucking BBC interviewer for this film is nuts, not to mention a total perv. You can stream it on Netflix at the link above.

Mail Order Wife (Film)

This may be the best film I've seen all year. Randomly stumbled upon it on Netflix. All I'm gonna say is it's about a dirtbag from Queens who orders a mail order bride from Burma, and a film crew that offers to pay all related expenses in exchange for rights to film the ensuing interactions. Seriously, watch this. You can watch instantly on Netflix here.

Toro y Moi

Not sure why everyone has been blogging about Toro y Moi's song "leave everywhere" lately. Maybe it has to do with that old "monkey see, monkey do" mentality? I dunno. Anyway, the song below is my favorite song he's come out with for some time. Maybe ever. Enjoy:

Toro y Moi - Right Ting

Treasure

I'm too distracted today to say anything about Treasure except that this song rules:

Treasure - Canada

Also, the video (starring Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee) is surprisingly romantic:

I'm too "meh" today to say anything about Baths except that this song rules:

Beach Fossils

This is my favorite album so far of 2010. There have been a lot of good leaks so far this year, but nothing comes close to this one. So there you have it! Now you don't even have to read the Pitchfork review when it comes out a month from now. You're welcome!

Beach Fossils - Daydream

Beach Fossils - Twelve Roses

Beach Fossils - Youth

Self-Titled LP out on Captured Tracks May 25th

Bad Lieutenant (Film)

It's a rare occassion when both the original and the remake of a film are both equally fucking good, and this just happens to be one of those cases. I remember when I first saw the original Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Kietel at about the age of 10 (props to my big brother for being an eternal bad influence!). It just happens to be way more graphic and disturbing than the new version with Nicholas Cage, and I remember feeling like I wasn't really sure what was going on, but whatever it was, it was very, very bad.

Wernor Herzog directed the new Bad Lieutenant starring Nicolas Cage, which he claims was not a remake of the old one, nor was he even aware of the original one with Harvey Kietel. This just happens to be total fucking bullshit, but you should still watch them both anyway.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

I wish I could visit whatever planet Ariel Pink is living on. I bet it's a really cool/weird place. At this point, Ariel Pink is kind of a legend. He was the first artist signed by Animal Collective to their old label Paw Tracks; he used to be in a sweet band called Holy Shit with fellow geniuses Christopher Owens (of Girls fame) and Matt Fishbeck, and he recently signed with 4AD and dropped the sublime single "round and round." Have a listen, and check out the weird vid too:

UPDATE - fucking Google made me take these tracks down too WTFux!

Mr. Untouchable (Film)

Mr. Untouchable tells the story of the rise and fall of Nicky Barnes, an arrogant and charismatic black leader and drug dealer who for decades was New York's most powerful and violent heroin dealer. His story has all kinds of unexpected twists and turns, he's incredibly funny and clever, and it amazes me that more people aren't familiar with this. This is so far going down as the movie I was most pleasantly surprised by this year, and you can stream it from Netflix right here.

Sonny & the Sunsets

If you like bands like Girls, Ganglians, and Thee Oh Sees, then you're guaranteed to like Sonny & the Sunsets. Actually, even if you don't like those bands, odds are you will still like this song. It's one of those songs that's impossible not to like. One of the guys is in Thee Oh Sees and another is from Fresh & Onlys. I would put money down that these guys are going to start blowing up really soon. By the way, the rest of the album is really good too. Check it out:

Sonny & the Sunsets - Too Young too Burn

Kavinsky

DOPE new track off Kavinsky's forthcoming EP Nightcall. Props to my nigga Joe for hooking this one up:

Really digging this new Foals jam. The last couple minutes are especially epic:

Foals - Spanish Sahara

Also, I decided I'm going to make a mixtape, and it's going to rule.

Stroszek (Film)

Without a doubt the best Werner Herzog film ever made, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Not even going to try to describe all the amazing things about Stroszek, but you can read the wikipedia here and stream it from Netflix here.

NEW CARIBOU ALBUM

That's right, THE NEW CARIBOU ALBUM HAS BEEN LEAKED, and I stayed up very late last night listening to the entire damn thing two times all the way through in a hazy cloud of smoke to be able to tell you all about it. So, SPOILER ALERT, it's REALLY dancy, and although I predict Pitchfork and co. will give it RAVING reviews (when it's actually released almost 6 weeks from now) because it's such a gigantic leap from anything they've done before, and because they will classify it as something along the lines of "paving the way for a new musical direction" of indy artists, I'm pretty sure I like their old albums better. Not trying to be a debbie downer; on the contrary, I'm just tryina keep it real. With that said, there are some good songs, and I think the song I posted below is the clear standout (wait for the vocals to kick in):

Caribou - Leave House

I can get down on some hip hop

No, I don't just listen to obscure "white boy" elitist indy music, and yes, I can get down on some hip hop. Sometimes, I may even drink 3 JOOSEs and make a Bone Thugs rap video, just for the fuck of it. Anywayz, here's a couple rap joints that my black ass has been blasting lately:

Drake - Over

Kollosus - ATL RMX, Breakin' Bread (Phaseone Remix)

Weed Diamond

I mentioned Denver-based Weed Diamond below in my post about Ancient Crux, but these guys are putting out some pretty dope jamz too. This may be a stretch, but to me it almost sounds like some fuzzed-out, really old Modest Mouse. Anywayz, peep dis trak:

Weed Diamond - Let's Burn One Down

Ancient Crux

This song by Ancient Crux has been stuck in my head all day long. It's got that twangy Smith Westerns + Black Lips garage punk style mixed with a 1960's diner vibe, not to mention a very catchy guitar riff that seems to have ingrained itself in my brain for the time being. Click the play button below and you can pre-order their new split with Weed Diamond here.

Ancient Crux - In Teen Dreams

Balam Acab

I feel like it's getting harder and harder to describe music these days. If you asked me a year ago what "downtempo dubstep" is I would have probably just nodded my head (because I know everything) and swiftly changed the subject. I still don't know what downtempo dubstep is, or what genre this kind of music falls into, but either way, I like this. Similar to local SF scary Halloween band OoOoO and Salem, Balam Acab is making dark music sound good again. Listen to this track, and wait for the bass + melody to start:

Balam Acab - Big Boy

Mathemagic

Toronto duo Mathemagic is making really beautiful music. In the same vein as the fuzzy, warm, synthy beachpop sounds of Washed Out, Small Black, and Memoryhouse, I wouldn't be surprised if these guys start to get big in the near future. Check out the two tracks below and keep on the lookout for their upcoming 5 song EP. Recommend listening to the beach with a blanket and a fatty.

Mathemagic - High

Mathemagic - Breaststroke

Billy the Kid (Film)

I first heard about the crazy good documentary Billy the Kid while reading Miranda July's blog (Yea, I read Miranda July's blog. WHAT!! YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT!!??). She had listed it as her favorite film of 2007, and it pretty much became mine too. It's about a kid in with an ineffable learning disability, dealing with the trials and tribulations of growing up in what some might call the "trailer trash" zones of Maine. It is pure movie magic, go see it.

Terribly Happy (Film)

Holy ball sack this movie is good. It's difficult to describe the plot to Terribly Happy while still doing it justice, but on the outside, it's about a Danish Marshall with a checkered past sent to patrol a small, seemingly safe village, who soon discovers its inhabitants have an extraordinarily twisted, dark and disturbing way of life. You could also say it's a psychological thriller about the universal human nature of corruption and secrecy. Or that if you took the plot to Hot Fuzz, mixed in some Coen Brothers and a little David Lynch, threw in some obscure Danish Westerns and a dash of Stephen King, mix them all up in a blender, and...argh! See, I knew I shouldn't have tried to describe the plot. Just go watch it, it's playing in select theaters now.

Restless People

Don't know much about Restless People besides that they're another up and coming Brooklyn band and the guys from Tanlines (pretty much my favorite band these days) and Professor Murder are in it. Sounds kind of like some tropical Phil Collins shit. Check the song below:

Restless People: Days of our Lives (Light in Mix)

Memory Cassette

Memory Cassette (aka Memory Tapes aka Weird Tapes) had a flurry of EPs that came out last year, and I really wasn't sold on them when I first heard them. They kept changing their band's name and had a bunch of EPs that had some of the same songs on them, which in and of itself was enough to derail my delicate attention span. But recently they started playing randomly on my itunes, and in this era of download-the-fuck-out-of-everything-and-ditch-it-if-doesn't-grab-you-immediately, I feel like I've discovered a lost, sunken treasure from wayyyyy back in June 2009. Maybe it's the cold weather-rainy days-being sick combination that is ideal for listening to this band, but I've been playing them like a broken record for weeks straight now. Check out these tunes, I think the first one is some kind of Stevie Nicks cover. Also, they're playing at bottom of the hill next Saturday, Feb 27.

Memory Cassette - Last One Awake (Friend Version)

Memory Cassette - Asleep at a Party

Bronson (Film)

No, this is not a film about that "tough guy" from Death Wish. It's about Britain's most famous prisoner Charles Bronson, real name Mickey Peterson. Originally sentenced to jail for 7 years for robbing like $40 from a post office, he's now been in prison for 34 years (30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement) for basically beating the shit out of everyone, sparking massive riots, and taking prison guards hostage. This movie is way more artsy and theatrical than you'd think, Tom Hardy is incredible, and some guy had it right when he said this is "a clockwork orange for the 21st century." Bronson is out on DVD now, highly recommended.

Primary 1

I'm stoked to have recently found out about London's Primary 1, who has produced Phoenix, Cut Copy, and the new Rapture album, and his first LP will be dropping this Fall. If you like really good bands like Metronomy, you're guaranteed to like this dude. You can download a 15 track collection compiled of demos and earlier work of Primary 1 right here.

Primary 1 is so slick that I'm posting 3 of his songs:

Primary 1 - Foaming (White Room Version 05)

Primary 1 - The Blues (feat. Nina Persson)

Primary 1 - Enough

Moon (Film)

I've never been a big science fiction fan. I've always hated Star Trek, could care less about Battlestar Galactica, and secretly resented my Dad for being such an Isaac Asimov nerdbot throughout my childhood. With that said, I think Moon may be the best science fiction movie I've ever seen. It is a total mindfuck, and has made me a bit more open-minded towards the genre. PS if the Oscars weren't decided purely by politics, money, and people that still believe Hollywood blockbusters are the best movies, guys like Sam Rockwell and Tom Hardy (who I'll write a blog about soon) would be at the top of the list for best actor.

Small Black

Somehow a lot of people still haven't heard of the Brooklyn based duo Small Black. I'm not really in the mood to try to describe what they sound like, but they're playing in San Francisco on March 28 with Washed Out and you better believe I already have my tickets for that.

Here's the vid and downloadable song below it:

Small Black - Despicable Dogs

Swansea Love Story (Film)

Really interesting and insightful new documentary about young British junkies just posted by the people over at VBS. Here's part one of the six part series:

Google Shuts Down MP3 Blogs

I read on Pitchfork today that Google owned Blogger (AKA the site you're on right now) is shutting popular MP3 blogs that post songs for "violating terms of service," which basically just means they're cracking down on sites like this one. Luckily I have like no readers, so the chances of them ever shutting me down are less than zero! In your face Google!

Anvil (Film)

The opening sequence in Anvil shows how in 1984 they toured with sweet metal-hair bands like Scorpions, White Snake, and Bon Jovi, and they were the one band of the group that's never quite been able to make it. They've been around forever and are still trying to make it (they just played a show at the Fillmore), and I think you should watch this radical and heartbreaking documentary about them. It's now available on DVD and Netflix.

Lemonade

Check the new track below from SF to NY transplants Lemonade. It's another blissed-out tropical-steel drums-dancy-irie Jamaican wonder from them, though in all it's goodness, I DON'T recommend you go to their myspace and listen to their other track to be released off their new Pure Moods EP. It's called "Underwater Sonics" and it sucks because I hate when the lead singer starts to sound a bit too much like this guy from Korn. Anyway, listen to this track below, not that other new one on their Myspace, mkay?

Lemonade - Lifted

Die Antwoord

These South African geniuses have already been blogged about quite a bit, but if you haven't heard of Die Antwoord yet, I suggest you get on this bandwagon immediately by clicking on the video below. I pray every night before I go to sleep that they will stop in San Francisco on their U.S. tour.

Die Antwoord - Enter the Ninja

Fever Ray

I kind of mentioned it below, but this is just another example of why those damn Swedes are light years ahead of us 'MerKans. Yes, Fever Ray is my hero.

A Prophet (film)

I've never been incarcerated before (excluding that one time in the drunk tank), but this movie literally made me feel like I was living a real-life nightmare in a filthy, corrupt French penitentiary. The movie begins with the Arab protagonist being forced to murder a fellow Arab by some Corsican mobster inmates, or face of the consequences of being murdered himself. The plot takes off from there, and I'm not surprised the critic in the poster above says that it "takes its place among the greatest crime films ever made."

I'm not sure when this movie comes out on DVD, though if you're the crafty type, you could probably find another way to track it down : )

Millionyoung (part 2)

Yes, I'm doing another blog about Millionyoung. Why? Because he rules. And he also just came out with a new EP that is über dank. Good bedroom dreamy washy poppy type stuff. Here's a couple tracks off the new EP:

Millionyoung - soft denial

Millionyoung - day we met

Capturing the Friedmans (Film)

Considering this documentary is a twisted tale of incest, rape, and pedophilia, I feel kind of weird calling Capturing the Friedmans "one of my favorite films." But, well, it is! It's so damn good! I've never seen a movie where there was so much home footage being taken, even before anyone knew there was anything super fucked up going on. If you have a Netflix account, you can stream it directly right here.

New Joanna Newsom!

I'm really excited about Joanna Newsom's new album. I was lucky enough to see her play the whole thing live in Big Sur about a year ago (quite possibly the best show I've ever seen), and have been waiting patiently ever since for its release. Drag City just released this song off the new album. Give it a listen and pick up the new triple album "Have One on Me" on Feb 23.

Joanna Newsom - "81"

Caribou

Check out this catchy new jingle just released from Canadian music gurus Caribou. Way more dancy than any of their previous stuff, but if this is a taste of things to come on their unreleased new album, I think 2010 will be a big year for these mystical beasts.

Caribou - Odessa

Golden Ages

First heard about Golden Ages over at getoffthecoast (excellent music blog btw). If you're into the tripped out animal collective/panda bear/neon indian/beach boys on acid aesthetic, then I highly recommend this solo artist. You can pick up the brand new album Tradition here. In the meantime, check out these sweet jamz:

Golden Ages - Waiting

Golden Ages - Be Cool
